The complete walkthrough for SBR Performance download tunes.
You bought the tune. Now you need to get us your file, and get ours back on the car. This is the whole process, start to finish, in plain English.
Typical turnaround is 24 to 48 hours. Pull your read tonight and your finished tune is usually sitting in your inbox within a day or two.
Read this once before you touch anything. Your part takes about 20 minutes total and the hardest thing you have to do is be patient.
What You Need Before You Start
- An HP Tuners interface (MPVI2, MPVI3, or MPVI4) with the OBDII cable
- HP Tuners VCM Suite installed on a Windows laptop
- Credits in your HP Tuners account. You do not need them to read the car, only to write the tune back. Check your account before your file comes back so you are not stuck waiting on credits.
- A battery charger or maintainer. Not optional. The key is on for several minutes with the engine off, and a weak battery mid-flash is the one thing that can ruin your day.
- Your interface serial number. It is printed on the device and shown in VCM Suite. You will need to send it to us.
Part 1: Pull Your Stock Read
This is the file that shows us exactly what is in your ECU right now. We build your tune directly on top of it, so it has to come off your actual car.
1. Get the car ready.
- Park it, put the charger on the battery
- If it's a street car, turn off the headlights, radio, blower, everything. Gutted race car with none of that? Skip it.
- Close the doors, or at least do not open and shut them during the read
2. Plug in.
Interface into the OBDII port under the dash, USB into the laptop. Wait for Windows to recognize it.
3. Key on, engine off.
Turn the key to the run position. Do not start the car.
4. Open VCM Editor.
Not VCM Scanner. Editor is the one that reads and writes tunes.
5. Flash > Read Vehicle.
If it asks what kind of read you want, choose the full read.
Reading is free. HP Tuners does not touch your credits until you write back to the ECU, so do not worry about credits at this stage.
6. Do not touch anything.
Let it run. Do not turn the key, do not unplug, do not close the laptop. It takes a few minutes.
7. Save the file.
When it finishes, go File > Save As and name it something obvious like YourName_stock_read.hpt. Save it somewhere you can find it, like your desktop.
That is your stock read. Key off, unplug, you are done with the car for now.
Part 2: Send It To Us
Here is the part people get wrong, so pay attention:
Reply directly to your order confirmation email.
Not a new email. Not a Facebook message. Hit reply on the confirmation email you got when you bought the tune. That keeps your file attached to your order and gets it in front of us fast.
In that reply, include:
-
The
.hptfile you just saved (attach it) - Your HP Tuners interface serial number
- Anything we should know about the car that was not in the order options
That serial number is required. We cannot finish your file without it, and if it is missing we have to email you and wait, which is time you could have spent making passes.
Part 3: What Happens On Our End
Quick version so you know what you are paying for.
We open your read, verify it is the right platform and the right file for what you ordered, and merge our SBR calibration into your file. Your tune is built on your ECU's own data, matched to the exact combo you ordered: your cam, your intake, your fuel.
Then we lock it. Your finished file is tied to two things:
- Your interface serial number
- Your VIN
That means the file only writes to your car, with your tool. Nobody in the pits is loading your tune off a thumb drive. That protects you and it protects us.
Then it comes back to you as a reply on that same email thread.
Part 4: You Got the File Back. Now What?
1. Save the attachment somewhere you can find it.
Download it out of the email and drop it on your desktop. Do not try to open it straight from your email client.
2. Get the car set up the same way as the read.
Battery charger on. Accessories off. Laptop plugged in or fully charged. Key on, engine off.
3. Plug the interface back in.
Same as before. Give Windows a second to see it.
4. Open VCM Editor and open your tune file.
File > Open, then select the file we sent you.
5. Flash > Write Vehicle.
This is where credits come into play. If the car has not been licensed yet, VCM Suite will prompt you and pull the credits from your account. That is a one time thing per car.
The write itself is set up as a calibration write. That is intentional. Your file is locked so it can only change the tune, not your VIN or security data.
6. Let it finish. Do not interrupt it.
Read that again. Do not turn the key. Do not unplug. Do not close the laptop lid. Do not let the battery die. A write that gets interrupted halfway is how ECUs end up on the bench.
7. Key off when it tells you to. Wait 30 seconds. Start it up.
It may idle a little different for the first minute or two while the ECU relearns. That is normal.
Part 5: First Drive and Getting It Dialed
Do not go straight to the track and send it. Give yourself one shakedown.
- Let it idle and come up to temp
- Drive it easy for a few minutes and listen
- Then start working into the throttle
- Watch your gauges, especially coolant temp and oil pressure
If anything sounds off, feels off, or throws a light, stop and call us. We would much rather hear from you before you hurt something than after.
Want it dialed in further? Send us a datalog. Pull a couple of WOT runs plus a few minutes of normal mixed driving in VCM Scanner, save it, and email it over on the same thread. That is how good tunes become great ones.
Common Questions
Do I need to unlock my ECU first?
Not to read it. Reading is free. The vehicle gets licensed with credits when you write the tune back, and VCM Suite walks you through it.
Can I use my buddy's HP Tuners tool?
For the read, yes. For the write, no. Your file is locked to the serial number you gave us. If you send us one serial and try to write with a different tool, it will not work.
What if I swap ECUs or change interfaces?
Reach out. Your file is locked to that VIN and that serial, so you will need a new one from us. Don't just start swapping and hope.
What if my read fails partway through?
Almost always a battery or connection issue. Put a charger on it, reseat the OBDII connector and the USB, and try again.
Can I save my stock file as a backup?
You should. Keep that original read somewhere safe. It is your factory calibration and it is worth having.
How long does turnaround take?
Typically 24 to 48 hours. If you ordered a combo we have not built yet, it becomes real tuning work instead of a quick merge, and we will email you with a realistic timeline. Either way you will hear from us.
Bottom Line
Charge the battery. Pull the read. Reply to your confirmation email with the file and your serial. Flash it when it comes back and do not interrupt the write.
That is it. Then go put it on the track.
Questions at any point in the process? Reply to your order email and we will get you sorted. We would rather answer a question twice than fix a problem once.
